[UNLOg x Sur Le Beat] Podcast #9 by Archibald Singleton

This month, and after a long wait, Unlog teams up with Sur Le Beat (CA)  for a cross podcast!

Sur Le Beat is a Montreal based french speaking blog created by Archibald Singleton and Sylv9st9r, that also focuses on pushing that weird music pattern that keeps your head nodding.

For this cross podcast project, we’re pleased to have Archibald Singleton, also of the duo project The Gulf Stream  (Daly City Recordings, Archipel) as our guest podcaster for this 9th edition. This 9th podcast (tracklist and download below) Meanwhile, Sur le Beat is simultaneously releasing an Unlog made podcast. Who? More details here :

Lorn returns with a new full-length album, his debut on Ninja Tune, and it’s a huge stride forward since Nothing Else (released on Brainfeeder, June 2010). Listening back to his first album, Lorn says it now seems “cold and strict.” Ask The Dust, on the other hand, is “haunted, oily, smeared,” and with this description he captures something of the intensely felt, visceral aliveness of the music.
If Lorn began his musical career as a poet of alienation, then Ask The Dust(named after the 1939 proto-Beat classic novel of the same name by John Fante) sees his music develop a more human energy. In particular, the use of his own singing voice (a process which began on the last track of Nothing Else, “What’s The Use”), which has added a new dimension to his often crunching and brutal but never less than beautiful electronic music.Take “Weigh Me Down,” where Lorn comes surprisingly close to glitched-out soul music. It would be easy to overlook while reaching for muscular superlatives, but his music is also supremely melodic, where a tune like “The Well” (ostensibly “a soundtrack to being buried alive”) is memorable for a melody that nags at your brain long after the music has stopped. “Dead Dogs” combines spectral choirs with explosive drumming, (one of three tracks with live drumming). “Chhurch” combines the feel of early electro with Lorn’s own highly developed aesthetic (originally written on tour, GonjaSufi came up with lyrics to accompany it, but never recorded them anywhere else save his iPhone). But it’s on a tune like “Ghosst” that he shows the sheer energy and raw drive he commands. It is exhilarating and slightly terrifying all at once. Other highlights include, « This », a wipe of a hand across a chalkboard, so to speak. A simple sequence to reset things, a mantra to calm the nerves. « Diamond », was among the first written for Ask The Dust, while Lorn was still up in northern Wisconsin, the last surge in his isolation, over the expanse of the lake in the house his grandfather built
Since the release of Nothing Else, Lorn has toured the world alongside the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Amon Tobin, and GonjaSufi to name a few. He became a devout owner of a B5 A4, and much like his dedication to music and art, wasted no time tearing it apart in order to learn how to put it all back together again. Ask The Dust suggests he’s learnt to do much the same with his emotions.

VLEK08/APP – A MIDI INSTRUMENT BUILDER FOR IPAD.
Developed by Herrmutt Lobby.

More info: beatsurfing.net

BUILD ORGANIC MIDI INSTRUMENTS.
– Create swarms of MIDI objects that fit your most delirious setup dreams. Just drag&mod.
– Overlap objects on layers, create new organic systems that bring back a human feel to your performances.
– Each object can interact with your DAW and/or alter any other object’s behaviour, creating an infinity of combinations.
– In-app editing: switch between edit and play modes in a split second.

BRING BACK EXPRESSION IN YOUR PERFORMANCE.
Build an instrument and play it, like a partition, in a 1000 different ways.
This video features 4 « operators »: the Line, the Circle, the Polygon and the Fader. Each of these operators allows you to build your own MIDI instruments from the ground up as if you were drawing them on the screen. The distribution of the objects and the trajectory of your fingers then help to reintroduce variety and a human feeling to your performance.

The Beatsurfing app is set to be released in Spring 2012.

This video shows Herrmutt Lobby playing with the new Beatsurfing app.
This video features an iPad2 running iOS 5 controlling an Ableton Live / Max For Live session.

Math Rosen live session #1 : Beast (1)

Let’s welcome Beast (1) first of a series of live session recorded by the Toronto based artist Math Rosen. For having the opportunity to play live on the same stage, I won’t teach you that his music kills it, you decide (but if you’re reading that right now, I’m pretty positive about seeing agreement in your eyes). But definitely, some artists clearly know what’s going on between their gear and what you’re hearing. Among them, some can control it, some are even doing pretty well and sometimes, even REALLY well.

Yeah, he’s that kind of guy… Check it out!

OPIUO : BUTTERNUT SLAP – PART 1 [ADDICTECH044]

Opiuo is easily one of the fastest rising stars in underground electronic music, and he steps into the fold for 2012 with his first installment of a series of cutting edge musical creations! The excitement and buzz around this release is off the charts, and for good reason. Opiuo has created a new, independent, and completely infectious sound; captivating an extremely wide audience with his genre defying catalog. Constantly touring internationally and spreading his music far and wide, his popularity is exploding due to his symbiotic connection to the audience and his high energy live performances.

Butternut Slap EP – Part 1 is the first entry of a 3 part series, and it expresses a diversity of styles of the Opiuo output. Each part has a theme, and upon completion of the release of the total trilogy, an album is formed.

The EP starts with tried and true banger “Bill Bro Baggins” drawing the dancefloor in with cinematics and then dropping the glitchbass bomb, as the introduction to the release, you can hear very easily that Opiuo is about to make a serious statement.

Next up is “Mouse Trap” where a funkified tribal low end intro sets the stage for pumping and jumping Opiuo vibes, horns riding atop the flexing beat, rolling hard with a large and in charge bassline. The energy and hype expressed through the speakers is undeniable!

Devil in the Dark and Load Landfill showcase Opiuo’s ability to use vocals as an intricate instrument within his compositions. The Devil in the Dark remix ramps up the tempo with smacking breakbeats and basslines, carefully crafted edits, and perfectly embedded vocal stylings from The Nomad. Especially impressive is the evolution of the drums and percussion starting organic and hybridizing throughout the track into a full on underground rager that could also be heard on the radio.

Load Landfill is a soulful lurching bass treat, where carefully placed melodies work their way around the syrupy vocals provided by Syrenisscreamy, completing the package with a strong note that organic and human elements not only belong in electronic dancefloor music, but are dearly needed.

This new series reaches deeper into the skill set of Opiuo, furthering establishing him as a prolific producer that completely understands immaculate production techniques, as well as incredible dance floor energy!

TRACKLISTING :
1. Opiuo – Bill Bro Baggins
2. Opiuo – Mouse Trap
3. The Nomad – Devil In The Dark (Opiuo Remix)
4. Opiuo + Badge – Load Landfill (feat. Syreneiscreamy)

Samples – Life of the Party [MAL030]

For those who missed it, Ben Samples has released his latest EP on MalLabel Music.

Ben Samples, well respected badman in the glitch hop arena, comes correct with a brand new batch of amazing, original material with his first full release from MalLabel Music, the deftly titled Life of the Party EP, four choice tunes ready to permeate dance floors worldwide Feb. 28th.

The EP comprises a grip of spry, chunky grooves packaged magnificently into some incredible bass bin knocking jams. Opening up the EP is Capture the Flag, a beastly melody stuffed with heroic, buzzing analog bass lines grinding aside stoutly hip hop breaks. Second is a veritable attention grabber entitled Bred 2 Party, endowed with ripping, crunchily distorted leads and big beats sure to set a party in motion quickly. Song number three, Onyx, is a gutsy, funky track full of thickly laden warm fuzz tones and a slapping rhythm. Finally, closing out the EP is the darkest of the quartet. Basscraft chugs and lurches with a lumbering gate, spouting intriguing sound design audio bits and an eerie, superbly supernatural vibe.

The Life of the Party EP is a certified body mover, a gem of a release that continues MalLabel’s already sterling, diverse 2012 schedule, and it’s a demonstration of one of glitch hop’s supreme talents.
