From juin 2012

Today’s pick : Math Rosen & Everydayz

I’m a nice guy.

Except when you give me tiewraps. This post was needed because of the two main reasons today I’ve had to give up tiewrapping my own suitcase over and over. And I’m not done.

Still got tiewraps. Lots of missions to come.

Enough talk, here are the two reasons that brought me back to the human condition :

MATH ROSEN – DRAGNET (Single)

Among you readers, some might have already spotted him on some live beatmaking videos (like this one, or that one), or tripping on the Highlander theme (epic time) with the track IMMRTL he made for our Unlog compilation (I can’t believe you didn’t get it yet, never too late).

Math comes back with with Dragnet, an EP produced for Dragnet Magazine and that features remixes from Edison, Infector (in a way, Math Rosen himself) and Living Stone. They certainly know a lot about tiewraps to make such a brain stimulating and calculated sequence of beats. In a way, what else would you expect from Math…

EVERYDAYZ – ETUDES ET BROUILLONS

One year back, his summer beat tape may have spent some time in your playlists. 2012, now signed on Blackelk Recordings, Ilia Koutchoukov aka Everydayz just released Etudes et Brouillons (Studies and drafts), available for free download. My advice would be to press play on the first song, and let it play itself. Except if you have to tiewrap your own room.

Shit, no more tiewraps… time to use TAPE…

Today’s pick : Digi G’alessio & Jonwayne

These pick’s aim was to introduce 2 artists and provide at least one free download to you readers, ok the third is for me and… i already fucked up the established pattern. Yes, week end can be an excuse but a better forgiveness is to publish 2 free downloads (yeah, so generous) i dug this week.

First one is from Digi G’Alessio, this italian beatmaker you heard in the Unlog Complex #1. The purple book is the third in a concept series based on colours, as the two others are yellow and brown. Dropped on June 16th on the belgian label Caoutchou Records. Very good vibes in this beat tape, big grooves… you know what to do : listen, name your price if you dig it, download and put this tape into your mp3 player.

Second one if from Jonwayne, this US producer you may already read about or listened in the 2nd Unlog Podcast, released his last EP « Jonwayne fucks Disney » on Stone Throw records.

As you certainly guessed, this EP focuses on samples from Disney’s movies, produced with an iPad, a Zoom H2, and, as usual, SP404.

Today’s pick : VNDL & R33 Soundmakin’

Unlike yesterday, today’s pick will feature two artists who strive in two different layers in this musical mesh. Yet, both of them appear on our Unlog Complex #01 project, which (nuff said) is still available for free download. Let’s start with…

VNDL – Gahrena : Paysages électriques (Hymen Recordings)

VNDL is familiar with our readers, through the podcast he’s provided some months ago and the track Mille fragments we’ve released with Blackelk Recordings. His work is something I really want to push not only because of the common approach of sound we share, but also because he’s a really prolific artist and whose sounds clearly evolves between each and every project he works on. We don’t want you to miss the chance to witness that.

So expect to deal with sound textures here. Remember that while music tastes can differ in many points between two people, we’re all sensitive to sound textures. It’s just a matter of context.

I like writing. I should do it more often. But sometimes, the description provided with a release fits way more when you want to describe it to someone else. It’s not always the case (and maybe a worst 10 album descriptions would be a funny game), but it’s the choice I’m gonna make now.

‘gahrena’ envisages a deeper exploration of virtual reality by using highly processed electric guitars as well as manipulated field recordings and a wide range of electronic devices. the sound on this album can be described as abstract electronica with a deep organic feel, where vndl’s inspiration and sonic research fuse with the amendatory work of nebulo, offthesky, pleq and c0ma.

vndl constructs a changing, mysterious sonic world recreated from aural landscapes already in existence. a gripping release taking you away to as-yet unknown environments – attentive listening required.

R33 Soundmakin’

Different topic now.

This broken beat / groove / hip hop oriented producer was unknown to me some months ago, until I discovered his project Klendatü on Bandcamp, thanks to a guy who’s used to stroll around the groove. Here it is.

If your question is « is it a free download », the answer is yes, and I’m even going to put tags on this article so everyone knows where those fresh beats are available.

Since then, we got in touch to invite him to join our beat tape project, and his track Octobre finally ended in the release. We’ve been discussing a lot on the final sound he wanted to have on his final, especially on his kick drums.

Despite my very selective (and boring) views on hip nop beats, this conversation made me understand the importance human groove takes in his abstract beats, which is confirmed by his latest release, a collaboration with MelodiQ.

Brace yourself, those two tracks got vibes!

Today’s pick : Mussck & LeGaScred

As I was busy on packing boxes and criticizing another study highliting recurrent chords in popular music that Axel Helios sent me, some tracks from Alva Noto were in charge of the sound design of my living room. Which made my roommate’s groove addict ears feel quite concerned about the health of my laptop (first entity in the whole creation to ever cumulate the status of IA and the condition of zombie). This basic cause/consequence effect we all know led me to the decision of playing something else.

This decision definitely changed the pattern of the day (and maybe switched my 2 brain hemispheres, no big deal), and here are the two parameters implied.

VALANCE DRAKES (aka Mussck) – Fallen Innocence [BK -K 028] For those among you who have never heard of his previous work, Mussck is a kind of IDM genius living in UK, already responsible for an almost uncountable amount of project, and who was the first to send us a track when we started our Unlog Complex #1 project. Available today as a free download release on the Japanese label Bunkai-Kei recordings, this 8 tracks project is one of those that literally takes all your short and long term available brain space to teach you one again what a single sound can carry as a texture, an entity, a part of a story. I didn’t expect to sound so poetic at that part of the day but yeah, that’s exactly what I mean to say right now. Judge by yourselves.

LeGaScred – Myriapod EP

Once the previous album over, you still ask yourself « what should play next? What’s the meaning of all that? ». At that moment, it’s great to have another digger friend in the person of VNDL who forwarded me 20 hours before an amazing EP, which would perfectly match in that precise moment. I pressed play again : I was right, second musical slap with this Myriapod EP. I really can’t wait to hear more from him released on a forward looking label.

Follow that link for more, we’re reaching a moment in which more words would be worthless, your ears would do a better job than me and my keyboard right now.

Yet, there’s an obvious connection between you reading this blog and me writing this article, which might lead you to associate those two releases in the same playlist too.

Just give it a try.

I’m back my own music. Boxes can wait. Everything can wait now.
