MEDVEDE VEDIA VOL.3

Medvede Vedia vol. 3 : Bears

Here comes the third volume of the Medvede Vedia compilations, music we love from 12 artists from this planet they think you need to hear.

So do we.

MEDVEDE VEDIA VOL 3

MED005: Various Artists « Medvede Vedia Vol.3

Bears have played an enormous role in the Native American Indian culture and their skins were often used for protection from the cold in the form of coats and blankets; their claws were used for making jewelry and necklaces and their heads provided masks for Shaman. Native Americans believe that the Bear has strong medicine magic and many tribes consider bears to be Shaman themselves. They are known to American Indian tribes and their Shamans as “Keeper of Medicine” because they keep all the ancient healing secrets of the Indians and the spirits of the Earth. »

Sicaa – The Source LP

Sicaa - The Source LP

Our friend Sicaa (UC03UC05) gathered 10 meaningful tracks he made between 2013 and 2015 in a digital album called The Source, released earlier this month.

Some words from the label :

« We are excited to present to you ‘The source’, the last work from our newly featured French Music Producer SICAA. Now 28 years old, he’s been developing his musical awareness since the age of 5 and […]
Every song is a story in itself. Cultures. Mindsets. Relationships. Artists. Videogames.
These are his influence.
This is The Source, of his inspiration.
As he puts it: “I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without my Sources.”
This EP represents keystone events of SICAA’s life between 2013 & 2015. »

And some words from Sicaa :

#1 ‘From Day One’

This one is the intro, so it had to be the most personal track of the album. The first part, which was called ‘What We Are’ at the very beginning is kind of a self portrait, a 144bpm beat which drives through a chaotic ambiance, forcing the song structure to match and adapt on the breaks and drops. The second part which start at 2’00 is dedicated to my father, Jef Sicard. I wanted to write a beautiful arrangement for him, using vocals in the way of Ennio Morricone (who i know he loves a lot) and working with the first part structure to paint a jazzy and poetic landscape, which reminded me a lot the way my dad works with arrangements. If you listen with both ears you can hear a chorus from him (alto sax) in the second part intro.

#2 ‘Years Like Days’

The second title of The Source is dedicated to the girl with who i spent this last year. The first date we had was just perfect and mesmerizing, like time as stopped just for us. It kept going for 39 hours (which was the first title). The day after, i was so happy that i started to write this tune, i was coming from a really bad period of my life, and the contrast was so intense, i was just submerged by inspiration, and ideas were flowing like never. You can picture the track as our date, meeting, then flirting during the first part, and making out during the second part. We were so connected it felt like we passed one year in a day, and already knew each other. So i finally named the track Years Like Days. This one means a lot.

#3 ‘Only You’
‘Only You’ is about the feeling that no one else can get your attention when you’re in love with someone. Just like if there was room for no other in your heart. It is actually quite close from an obsessive feeling… and love can drive you close to madness sometimes, so i wanted to write something obsessive, but also sweet and lovely, i worked some time on that melody, to finally find the proper arrangement. The first edit was longer, including a violent dubstep part at the half of the track, but it was a bit too much for a love song, so i finally removed it. The first and full title of this theme was ‘Only You Can Blow My Mind’.

#4 ‘Time Shift’
This one is the oldest track from the Lp. I actually was recording a podcast, and needed one track to match with the ‘Even Bears’ by Kuhn (which i love soooo much!), so i started to work on a midtempo track, and it came clear very quickly that it needed some major contrast to match with the awsome melody of ‘Even Bears’, so i had that idea to mix-up ethnic vocals with sci-fi oriented elements to create a kind of time bridge with past and future. Just try to mix em both together, hell of a combo.

Woodwire – Oddyssea

After a serious track on our latest compilation with the track Nebula, Woodwire is back on one of the most promising french label, Cosmonostro.
For this new EP, Woodwire is at his best with his aerial style

« Woodwire elaborated some cinematic ideas upon a more trip-hop oriented project he was working on.
It eventually became Ignite that would be the actual introduction to a new project of his – Oddyssea.
Promises was made in one night inspired from hours spent that day at a friend’s house listening to vinyls while L’Etage was a track he worked on repeatidly over weekends with what one can say, a more of a dedicated producer’s perspective. Sapphire and Hazard were made while commuting in trains sampling piano recordings performed at home beforehand. »

CSG 2015

Community Scratch Games 2015

Galway, The City of the Tribes, west of Ireland.

April 4th, in a pub.

That’s where will be held the 9th edition of one of the most wanted turntablism event on the planet, the 9th edition of the Community Scratch Games. 2 days full of shows, scratch sessions with G.O.D. (Grandeurs Of Delusion), Oslo Flow, Lewis James, Backtrack Valance Drakes, Fidel Cutstro and many others. The legend states that previous editions saw tablists coming from everywhere battle each other on the decks for a bag of meat. Basics.

Community Scratch, is a non-profit group of DJs and producers (humans such as Jimmy Penguin, Vince Mac Mahon, Manipulate, Deviant, Naive Ted, Danny Deepo and Mikey Fingers to name a few) dedicated to promoting the arts of hip hop and DJ culture through workshops, seminars, concerts and music releases. For the past 9 years, they have released no less than 32 projects, available for free download here, soon to be followed by Jimmy Penguin and Djackulate’s Turbo Gangsgter Sandwich EP and Penguin & Manipulate’s Penguins’ Hatetank. Some physical releases are also available here.

So, what to expect from a 2 days scratch session from those guys?

« Skratching in the pub. For two days. With some of the best vinyl manipulators in the world. From battle-hardened world champions to experimental turntable musicians. From grizzled vets to fresh faced youths. Performing together to promote not only themselves and their art, but to come as one for the good of an artform that unites them.

Of course, no-one could (or should) endure two whole days of skratching. Sure you’d go mad. So the festival has evolved to include friends and collaborators across the musical spectrum. Thus, the finest live musicians, rappers and beatmakers alike take their place amongst the turntable hysterics.

World champion DJ Chile opens the festival with a freestyle set at 5pm on Saturday. Chile will also be performing the following day with G.O.D.’s Jimmy Hatetank and Galway skratch hero Jimmy Penguin in new skratch project Wat Tyler’s Soundcard.

The meteoric Rusangano Family continue their quest to blow apart every venue in this country and showcase their hyper modern, soul-filled, hip-hop grime in the Bierhaus on Saturday evening. Conversely, emerging rappers Clerk 5 and Same D4ence, as well as young Clare DJ Daithi Curtin, make their Galway debuts earlier the same day.

Galway locals Noid the Droid and Zinc bring their respective brands of esoteric and forward thinking live music to the Sunday showcases while turntable veterans Naive Ted, Djackulate and Danny Deepo create three very different skratch messes the day before. The hip-hop DJ’s DJ of choice Handsome Paddy makes his CSG debut seeing out the Saturday shenanigans.

Freestyle skratch nuts Darcy, Symatic & Kutclass make the trip across the Irish Sea to open the Sunday event. Emerging producer Nyt Bloomer showcases his beats and bleeps a little later and Hobo Convention’s JusMe will bless everyone’s ears with one of his choice DJ sets from across the musical spectrum.

Electronic bass explorations are the name of the game late on Sunday as Rick Soul & Lewis James combine forces before the mysterious bass enthusiast KOI>3.2^6 takes the stage for a rare live show. B-Music representative Christine Kelly wraps up the weekend on Sunday night with a vinyl only set of psychedelia and rowdy rare grooves.

All that and we haven’t even mentioned the cornerstone event, the coup de gráce, the Community Skratch Games Open Freestyle Battle Royale. Previous editions have featured total novices and battle veterans, young upstarts battling alongside world champions. All for a bag of meat. And this year, for the first time ever, a really fancy skratch crossfader from Pro X Fade. But really for the craic. And maybe the fader. Tis the most fun a battle has ever been. Fact.

The incomparable Ray Wingnut will be holding down hosting duties for the two days and there will be new music releases, merchandise and the maybe even the odd surprise and impromptu performance.

The weekend also sees the launch of a new era for Community Skratch as they move towards releasing tools for skratch DJs, beginning with ‘CSM Skipless’ later this year. »

CSG actually started a Kickstarter campaign to gather more support and release their brand new scratch tool, used here by Jon1st (DMC Online World Champ 2013) and Jimmy Penguin.

Stay tuned for the Turbo Gangsgter Sandwich EP (around May).

Turnsteak – Digitale Pourpre LP

Unlog and the Turnsteak have a long common story and obviously we’ve been waiting for their new LP for a long time. Even if all the team received the presskit and the album, we’ll give you some infos.
Digitale Pourpre was released on march 10th on With Us Records. This new LP is really rich, the style oscillates between UK garage, wonky and electro. Less glitch than what we would expect in this project, and the result is amazing.
Here’s the video clip of the first single Purpurea. This very graphic and colorfull video has been directed by Caroline Cutaia.
